31 January 2027. Mark it in red. That's the date Openreach finally closes the UK's Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) for good, the analogue copper backbone that has carried the nation's calls, alarms, payment terminals, and telemetry for over a century.
If your business, or your customers' sites, still depend on copper lines for anything, voice, broadband, lift phones, EPOS terminals, door entry, telecare, this is the moment to have a migration plan. And for a growing number of use cases, that plan doesn't have to mean waiting on a fiber install date. It can mean going straight to satellite.
What's actually happening in 2027
The UK's telecoms providers are unanimous on the headline facts:
PSTN and ISDN services are being retired nationwide by BT/Openreach, with the cut-off date set for 31 January 2027.
Every phone line will move to an All-IP, internet-based network. Voice becomes VoIP; broadband shifts to Full Fiber (FTTP) or single order broadband (SOGEA).
This isn't just a phone problem. Openreach and the major carriers have flagged that PSTN, ISDN, and ADSL underpin far more than calls, think lift emergency phones, alarm systems, point-of-sale machines, telecare pendants, and remote telemetry. Anything plugged into a phone socket is in scope.
Wireless Logic estimates BT alone has identified around 200 distinct PSTN-dependent use cases, from payment terminals to industrial telemetry, that will all need a new way to connect.
The scale of the challenge is why providers are urging businesses to start auditing their estate last year, and if not then, now, certainly do not wait until late 2026 to find out you have an imminent cliff edge. Every site with PSTN-dependent equipment needs to be identified, assessed, and migrated, and fiber rollout, while progressing, won't reach every location.
The gap fiber can't fill
Full Fiber is the default answer for most premises, and rightly so. But it has two well-known limits:
1. Geography. Openreach is targeting the majority of the UK for Full Fiber coverage by late 2026, with the remaining rural minority not covered until years later. If your branch, farm, construction site, or plant room sits in that gap, you can't simply "switch to fiber" on schedule.
2. Non-standard sites. Lift shafts, standalone alarm cabinets, temporary sites, remote pumping stations, and mobile assets were often connected to PSTN precisely because running new cabling was impractical. Digging a fiber trench to a rural water outstation or a construction site that will be gone in six months rarely makes economic sense.
This is exactly the gap where satellite or cellular connectivity, specifically a managed service, stops being a novelty and starts being the pragmatic answer.
