Hi Algi! Let’s kick things off — please introduce yourself to everyone.
My name is Algimantas Banys, and I’m originally from a small village in Lithuania where I grew up on a farm. For the first 18 years of my life, that was home, and it taught me a lot about hard work and appreciating the simple things. In 2010 I moved to the UK, and over the past 15 years I’ve built a life here. I met my wife, and together we now have a little one. Life is busy, but in the best way, family adventures to the zoo, beach, or park keep us moving, and it’s been amazing watching my son discover the world.
Wow, Lithuania and the UK both sound amazing! I’m a little jealous you’ve lived in two different countries. How did you first get into networking?
My journey into networking started with a passion I discovered as a teenager. At 13, I got into computers, and by 16 I was already experimenting. Even running my own gaming server (without much idea what I was doing at the time!). For years I wasn’t confident enough to chase IT as a career, but over time I found what I really love: Networking.
Finding your passion for networking so young is really cool! Could you share how you got started at Blue Wireless and what you’ve enjoyed most along the way?
I joined Blue Wireless in February 2025 as a Network Engineer in the UK office. Before this, I didn’t have a ton of hands-on experience in networking, but I had the drive to learn. From day one, I was welcomed with open arms and given the support I needed to grow. What stands out the most is the culture. Everyone treats each other with respect and understanding. It really feels like working with the best people.
I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your work here! Can you walk us through what a typical day looks like for you?
At work, I strive to make every site survey and installation as perfect as possible, because happy customers and smooth operations are what keep the company running efficiently. I enjoy supporting my colleagues whenever I can, and in my free time, I experiment and learn more about technology to continuously improve my skills. After all, technology never stops evolving. I believe preparation is key, and when done right, it makes a huge difference in both day-to-day work and long-term projects.
I’m really looking forward to growing my knowledge in LTE, 5G, and Starlink. My goal is to become more efficient in my work, to be able to help others to get better, and to keep developing both as a professional and as a colleague. There’s so much potential here, and I’m excited to be on that path.
Sounds amazing indeed. Shifting to the fun side — what are you enjoying outside of work?
Basketball has always been a big part of my life. I love following the LA Lakers and, of course, supporting the Lithuanian national basketball team. I also enjoy gaming, especially Counter-Strike (an all-time favourite), and I used to spend a lot of time in Lineage 2 and MMO games. These days, much of my free time goes into my home lab and experimenting with networking and IoT projects. It’s a never-ending playground!
But above all, most of my time now belongs to my son. Whether we’re playing at the beach, exploring the zoo, or just running around the park, I enjoy showing him as much of the world as possible.
To wrap up - If you had to pick one food to eat for the rest of your life, what would it be?
My favourite foods are kebabs, potatoes, and jelly! But honestly, my wife makes the best food in the world. She’s set the bar so high that even when we eat out, it’s hard to compare.
Once, I had the chance to meet Bear Grylls and ask him a quick question. I asked if penguins have knees, and his reply completely caught me off guard: “I’m not sure, but they taste good.” Needless to say, I was left speechless! So, here’s my question back to the readers — what do you think: do penguins have knees?
